2020 Honda CR-V vs Mazda CX-5

2020 Honda CR-V

If you want a crossover SUV that has it all, then you’re probably looking at models like the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5. Local drivers like you around Marlton, Mt. Laurel, and Cherry Hill tend to love both vehicles, but which one will be a better fit for your lifestyle?

To help you decide, our team at Burns Honda compared the 2020 Honda CR-V vs. Mazda CX-5. Keep reading to find out what we learned.

Standard Engine Power and MPG: Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5

2020 Honda CR-V Engine SpecsPowerful, versatile, and efficient powertrains are the standard when you’re looking at capable crossovers like the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5.

We see this clearly in their drivetrains. Both vehicles let you choose between a lightweight and efficient front-wheel drivetrain (FWD) and a smart all-wheel drivetrain (AWD) that maximizes on handling and all-weather capabilities.

The two SUVs hit the ground running, too, with a standard engine that delivers plenty of power. In the Honda CR-V, this is a 1.5L turbocharged I-4 engine. The Mazda CX-5 comes standard with a 2.5L I-4 that doesn’t have that extra turbocharged kick. We see that difference in the standard horsepower outputs:

Standard fuel economy (FWD)

28 MPG city, 34 MPG highway1

25 MPG city, 31 MPG highway

6-speed automatic

Not only does the standard engine in the Honda deliver more horsepower than the Mazda, it does so while also providing a higher EPA-estimated fuel economy on the LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring trim levels. Take a look here:

  • Honda CR-V fuel economy (AWD): 27 MPG city, 32 MPG highway1
  • Mazda CX-5 fuel economy (AWD): 24 MPG city, 30 MPG highway

If we compare FWD, we see a similar pattern. The Honda CR-V gets an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 28 MPG city and 34 MPG highway on the LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring trim levels.1 The Mazda CX-5 gets an EPA-estimated FWD fuel economy of 25 MPG city and 31 MPG highway with its standard powertrain.

This difference is due in part to the vehicles’ different transmissions. The Honda CR-V comes with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) while the Mazda CX-5 has a 6-speed automatic.

The CVT tends to offer more fuel efficiency because instead of having six set shift points like a 6-speed automatic transmission, it allows for nearly infinite shifts between the upper and lower limits.

Dimensions inside the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 Cabins

Now, let’s take our Honda CR-V vs. Mazda CX-5 comparison inside the cabin to explore the dimensions each of these SUVs offer. Both crossovers comfortably seat five passengers between the two rows, so there’s plenty of room for everyone you may want to bring along on your next adventure.

They also have comparable specs in terms of headroom and legroom, but we noticed a variation in their cargo capacities:

Honda CR-V

Mazda CX-5

Headroom (front/rear)

40.1/39.2 inches

39.7/39 inches

Legroom (front/rear)

41.3/40.4 inches

41/39.6 inches

Trunk volume/cargo volume

39.2/75.8 cubic feet

30.9/59.6 cubic feet

As you can see, the CR-V offers significantly more cargo volume whether you keep the rear seats upright or fold them down. This means that drivers in the Honda CR-V may be able to pack heavier while those in the Mazda CX-5 may need to leave some stuff behind.
