Honda Accord Hybrid
Let's start with a classic sedan. The Honda Accord is a commuter car that we're all familiar with. However, with the hybrid powertrain, you'll get the sedan you know and love, but with an extra-efficient twist.
The Honda Accord hybrid comes with a powerful I-4 engine and an AC Synchronous Permanent-Magnet Electric Motor. This powertrain is paired with an eCVT for maximum performance and efficiency. All these components work together to help you achieve the following specs:
- Net system horsepower:Â 212 horsepower
- EPA-estimated fuel efficiency:Â 48 city/48 highway MPG1
Note that that those MPG ratings are for the Hybrid, Hybrid EX, and Hybrid EX-L trim levels.
With ECON, Sport, and EV drive modes, you'll have the ability to choose whether you're more focused on efficiency (ECON) or performance (Sport) or whether you're driving on fully electric power (EV).
Hybrid Honda CR-V
Next, we have a popular Honda CR-V that gets the hybrid treatment. We're talking about the hybrid CR-V. The EX, EX-L and Touring trim levels make the hybrid powertrain available, which includes the following specs:
- Net system horsepower:Â 212 horsepower
- EPA-estimated fuel efficiency:Â 40 city/35 highway MPG2
These MPG specs are for the EX, EX-L, and Touring hybrid trims of the Honda CR-V. It also comes standard with the Real Time AWD (all-wheel drive) with Intelligent Control Systemâ„¢. This AWD system helps to improve traction control by actively readjusting torque distribution based on your driving conditions.
You'll also have enough seats for five passengers and a total cargo volume of 75.8 cubic feet with the Honda CR-V Hybrid.
Honda Insight Hybrid
If you want a car that seamlessly blends class with efficiency, then you're going to love the Honda Insight. This sedan makes its hybrid power standard, running on an I-4 engine, an AC Synchronous Permanent-Magnet Electric Motor, and an eCVT. It gets the following specs:
- Net system horsepower:Â 151.5 horsepower
- EPA-estimated fuel efficiency:Â 55 city/49 highway MPG3
These EPA-estimated efficiency ratings apply to the LX, and EX, trim levels of the Insight. This car also lets you choose between three different drive modes to decide how you drive: Sport, EV, and ECON.
Meanwhile, the Shift-By-Wire feature of the transmission keeps the inside looking sleek and futuristic by replacing the lever gear selector with a streamlined push-button shifter.
How Does a Hybrid Car Work?
Hybrid cars combine an electric motor with a gas engine to improve fuel efficiency. It works by switching between electric motor power, usually during low-speed city driving, and gas engine power, which often kicks in on the highway or during acceleration.
By being able to split the work between the motor and the engine-or even run solely on the electric motor at certain times-your Honda hybrid can conserve gas for when it needs it most. This then improves your overall efficiency.
If you're wondering how the electric motor stays charged, HEVs of course have a smart solution to that. It's done through technology like regenerative braking, which harnesses and recycles kinetic braking energy. The gas engine can also charge the battery while you drive.
If you have a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), on the other hand, you can charge the motor yourself by plugging your vehicle in to a charging port at home, work, or on the go, where available. This allows you to extend the amount of time you can operate on fully electric power, without dipping into your fuel stores.
